Every last Thursday of the month on the island of St. Eustatius, one can expect to enjoy the nice atmosphere that is set-up at the Mike van Putten Youth Centre. The event dubbed “Statia Taste of the Cultures” is a local’s favorite place to go.
This event was made with people food and fun in mind, creating an atmosphere where all cultures on the island can unite, and it is working.
Statia Taste of the Cultures is a community experience, a cross-cultural event, exhibiting multiple nationalities. Engaging in conversations, while having a snack or a cold drink with like-minded people from all walks of life is the concept behind the event. Visitors, as well as locals, have gotten the opportunity to get out of the house, take a break from a busy schedule and tour a total of 16 booths as they take a taste from flavors of various cultures.
This eye-catching extravaganza is for all to enjoy. Besides tasting, there is also a program put in place monthly which includes; Dancing, band performances, skits, documentaries, Dj Entertainments etc. One of the most attractive parts of the event is the price factor. All dishes are shared in small portion sizes and are sold at set prices to a maximum of only 5 US dollars. This gives guests the opportunity to taste as many dishes as possible.
The national dish on St. Eustatius is “Goat meat rice and peas with provisions”. The St. Eustatius Tourism Development Foundation carried out a survey which by the results determined that Statian’s love goat meat. Goat meat with rice and peas has been the chosen dish in the past and is still loved by many inhabitants.
